Ledger®Login | Getting started™ with Ledger®

Ledger®Login describes how you access Ledger Live using your Ledger hardware wallet. Unlike web accounts, Ledger’s model ties access to a physical device plus a device PIN — keeping your private keys offline. This guide covers installation, the login flow for desktop and mobile, secure transaction signing, troubleshooting, and best practices.

What is Ledger®Login?

Ledger®Login is the process of authenticating to the Ledger Live application by connecting and unlocking your Ledger hardware wallet (for example: Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, Ledger Stax). Ledger Live is an interface; your private keys remain inside the hardware device. “Logging in” therefore means proving ownership of the hardware (physical device + PIN) and, optionally, unlocking the Ledger Live app with a local password or biometrics.

Why hardware-based login matters

Hardware-based login dramatically reduces the attack surface. Even if your computer is infected, attackers cannot sign transactions without the physical device and its PIN. Important advantages:

  • Keys never leave the device.
  • On-device verification: addresses, amounts and fees are shown on the device screen for you to confirm.
  • Self-custody: you control the recovery phrase — Ledger Support never asks for it.

Download & install Ledger Live

  1. Always start at Ledger.com/Start and download the correct installer for your OS.
  2. For mobile, install Ledger Live from the App Store or Google Play (developer: Ledger SAS).
  3. Run the installer, launch Ledger Live, and allow updates — updates include security patches and new device support.

Tip: Bookmark the official start page and verify the app publisher to avoid phishing and fake apps.

Ledger®Login flow — Desktop

  1. Open Ledger Live. If you enabled it, enter your local app password to unlock the interface.
  2. Connect your Ledger device using a data-capable USB cable and unlock it by entering the device PIN on the hardware.
  3. Open the app for the relevant blockchain on the device (e.g., Bitcoin app for BTC) so Ledger Live can sync accounts.
  4. View balances, prepare transactions, and sign them on-device — every signature requires physical confirmation.

You can view portfolio data without the device only if you disable app password protection; however, sending requires the connected device and PIN.

Ledger®Login on mobile (pairing)

  1. Install Ledger Live Mobile and secure it with a password or biometrics.
  2. Pair your Ledger device: Nano X pairs via Bluetooth inside Ledger Live; Nano S Plus connects via USB OTG on supported Android devices.
  3. Enter the device PIN on the hardware to authorize pairing and to sign transactions when prompted.

Tip: Disable Bluetooth when not pairing to reduce exposure on mobile devices.

Signing transactions — verify on-device

When sending crypto, Ledger Live prepares the unsigned transaction and sends it to your Ledger device for signing. The device displays the recipient address, amount, and fee. You must verify every field on the device display before approving. If any detail differs from your intent, cancel the operation and re-check — only the on-device display is authoritative.

Warning: Never approve a transaction unless the address and amount shown on your Ledger device match exactly what you intended.

Common login issues & fixes

  • Device not detected: Try another USB cable or port, avoid USB hubs, restart Ledger Live and your device.
  • Bluetooth pairing fails: Forget the device in your phone’s Bluetooth settings and re-pair from Ledger Live.
  • App crashes: Clear cache (Settings → Help → Clear cache), reinstall from the official site, and restart the system.
  • Forgot app password: Reset Ledger Live and reconnect your device — funds remain safe because keys are on-device.

Lost device & recovery

If your Ledger device is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can restore access on a new Ledger device using your 24-word recovery phrase. Purchase an authentic device, choose “Restore from recovery phrase,” and enter the seed on the new hardware. If the recovery phrase is lost or exposed, funds may be unrecoverable — protect the phrase offline in secure locations.

Security checklist — before every session

  • Download Ledger Live only from Ledger.com/Start or official app stores.
  • Never enter or share your 24-word recovery phrase — Ledger Support will never ask for it.
  • Verify transaction details on the Ledger device screen before approving.
  • Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated.
  • Use strong local app passwords or biometrics on shared devices.

Need help? Use the official Ledger Help Center at support.ledger.com or the in-app help widget. Beware of unsolicited messages claiming to be support — legitimate support will never request your recovery phrase.
